The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to restore petrol subsidy and introduce a minimum wage of at least N500,000 per month if elected president in 2027.
Sowore made the pledge in a post on his official X account on Monday, arguing that Nigerian workers deserve wages that can adequately meet their living expenses, The News Edition reports.
He said attempts to challenge his party’s proposed N500,000 monthly living wage with economic statistics would not alter his position.
“Under our government, Nigerian workers will earn a minimum wage of at least N500,000 monthly. We will also restore the petrol subsidy,” Sowore stated.
The issue of petrol subsidy remains a major point of debate among politicians ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The subsidy was removed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in 2023, with the government maintaining that the policy was necessary to reduce the cost of subsidy payments and redirect public funds.
Some presidential candidates have, however, proposed changes to the current fuel-pricing framework.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has proposed restoring a form of subsidy targeted at supporting domestic refiners.
Other candidates have taken a different position. Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Seyi Makinde of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) have said they would not return to the previous subsidy regime.
Makinde has instead proposed a cheaper domestic crude pricing arrangement for Nigerian refineries as an alternative approach to reducing petrol prices.
