US President Donald Trump has insisted that any peace agreement with Iran must satisfy his administration’s core demands, as negotiations to end the ongoing Middle East conflict continue without a final breakthrough.
A White House official said on Friday that Trump would only approve a deal that serves American interests and ensures Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.
The comments followed a two-hour meeting at the White House Situation Room, where Trump reviewed the latest developments but reportedly did not make a final decision.
Meanwhile, Iran pushed back against suggestions that an agreement was imminent.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said discussions were ongoing but stressed that “no final agreement has been reached”, The News Edition reports.
Trump has called for Iran to permanently abandon any nuclear weapons ambitions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. He also suggested both countries could cooperate on handling Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile.
However, Iranian state media disputed several of Trump’s claims, saying some of the reported terms were inaccurate. Reports also indicated that Tehran is seeking the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets before advancing negotiations.
Despite the disagreements, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signaled openness to a “dignified framework” for ending the conflict, suggesting diplomatic efforts remain active.
The outcome of the talks is being closely watched worldwide due to its potential impact on regional security, global energy supplies, and international markets.
