Christian Body Says Nigeria’s Religious Diversity Must Be Reflected in Political Leadership
The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has declared its opposition to the adoption of a Muslim-Muslim ticket for elective public office ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that Nigeria’s religious and ethnic diversity should be reflected in its leadership.
The position follows the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to endorse President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, both Muslims, as its presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
In a statement issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, PFN National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Sylvanus Ukafia, said the fellowship believes inclusive governance is essential for strengthening national unity and promoting a sense of belonging among all Nigerians, The News Edition reports.
According to the PFN, Nigeria can only achieve lasting peace and progress when justice, equity, the rule of law, and constitutional principles are upheld.
The fellowship maintained that it does not support a Muslim-Muslim ticket, arguing that the country’s multi-religious and multi-ethnic character should be reflected in its political leadership.
PFN Opposes Restrictions on Christian Preaching
The Christian body also rejected any proposed law or policy that seeks to ban or place undue restrictions on Christian preaching.
It argued that such measures would violate constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of religion, expression, conscience, and peaceful assembly.
While acknowledging the government’s responsibility to maintain public order, the PFN stressed that regulations should not be used to suppress legitimate religious activities or infringe on the rights of citizens.
The fellowship called on all levels of government to uphold the Constitution, protect the rights of every Nigerian regardless of religious affiliation, and ensure that no legislation discriminates against any faith.
PFN further urged Christians across the country to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and prayerful while exercising their constitutional rights responsibly.
It also encouraged continued dialogue among government officials, religious leaders, and civil society groups to address issues capable of undermining national unity, reaffirming its commitment to promoting peace, justice, and national development.
