Three security operatives were reportedly killed on Monday night after suspected gunmen launched an attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State.
Sources said the attackers stormed the institution at about 11:40 p.m. in what appeared to be an attempt to breach the nation’s foremost policy and leadership training centre.
The assault triggered a fierce exchange of gunfire between the assailants and security personnel stationed at the facility, with security operatives successfully preventing the attackers from gaining access to key areas of the institute.
A staff member of NIPSS, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the incident and described the attack as sudden and unexpected.
According to the source, security forces mounted a strong resistance that forced the attackers to retreat before causing further damage within the institution.
The staff member disclosed that three members of the security team lost their lives during the confrontation, including two soldiers and a police officer attached to the institute.
The motive behind the attack had not been established as of the time of filing this report.
Residents Panic Over Gunfire
Residents of nearby communities were thrown into panic as gunshots echoed across the area during the attack.
A resident of Kuru, Bulus Haruna, said the sound of sustained gunfire lasted for several minutes, causing fear among residents who were uncertain about the source of the violence.
The incident has renewed concerns over security in parts of Plateau State, which has witnessed a series of violent attacks in recent years.
NIPSS Confirms Incident
Meanwhile, the management of NIPSS has confirmed that an attack occurred but assured the public that the situation has been fully contained.
In a statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Department, Dr. Osime Samuel, the institute said security personnel and relevant agencies responded swiftly to the incident.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.
“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement said.
The institute emphasized that all academic and administrative activities are proceeding normally and that there is no immediate security threat within the facility.
Investigation Underway
NIPSS disclosed that security agencies have commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The institute cautioned members of the public against relying on unverified reports circulating on social media, noting that it would be premature to speculate on the nature or objectives of the attack while investigations remain ongoing.
According to the statement, the institute is working closely with relevant security authorities and will provide verified updates as more information becomes available.
Management also commended the professionalism and bravery displayed by security personnel who responded to the attack and reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and security of staff, participants, and residents within the institute community.
