Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his belief in democracy as the most viable path to Nigeria’s development, arguing that the country’s challenges stem from poor leadership decisions rather than flaws in the democratic system itself.
In his 2026 Democracy Day address titled “Of Freedom and Development,” the governor said Nigerians must embrace greater responsibility in strengthening democratic institutions through accountability, civic participation, and good governance.
According to Otti, democracy has provided the framework for national growth and freedom, but its success ultimately depends on the choices made by both leaders and citizens, The News Edition reports.
“It is not democracy that has failed; we have only been let down by errors in our individual and collective decisions,” he stated.
The governor paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle and other pro-democracy advocates whose sacrifices helped secure Nigeria’s return to civilian rule.
He noted that the freedoms enjoyed today were earned through years of resistance against military dictatorship and should not be taken for granted.
Otti Warns Against Electoral Misconduct
Otti also cautioned Nigerians against electoral apathy, vote buying, and political violence, stressing that active citizen participation remains essential for a healthy democracy.
He warned that disengagement from the electoral process weakens democratic institutions and limits the ability of citizens to influence governance.
“The only reward for electoral indifference is misery,” the governor said, urging voters to reject practices that undermine the credibility of elections.
According to him, citizens who sell their votes or support divisive political tactics contribute to the erosion of democratic values and accountability.
Highlights Administration’s Achievements
Speaking on developments in Abia State, Otti said democratic governance has enabled his administration to pursue reforms aimed at improving infrastructure, security, education, and social welfare.
He maintained that the state has made significant progress in reclaiming its development agenda and creating opportunities for sustainable growth.
The governor expressed confidence that ongoing reforms would continue to yield positive results, insisting that Abia would not return to what he described as an era of poor performance and mediocrity.
He called on residents to remain informed, engaged, and committed to holding public officials accountable, emphasizing that the preservation of democracy requires collective effort and continuous participation.
Otti concluded by urging Nigerians to protect democratic gains and work together toward building a more prosperous and accountable society.
