The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has ordered public primary and secondary school teachers across Oyo State to begin an indefinite strike action over the continued abduction of teachers and pupils in the state.
The industrial action, which takes effect from Monday, June 1, 2026, follows growing concerns over the safety of educators and students, as the victims remain in captivity with no confirmed information about their release.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the NUT Oyo State Wing, Hassan Fatai, and the Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union said the prolonged detention of the abducted teachers and pupils has generated fear among education workers and undermined confidence in the state’s school system, The News Edition reports.
According to the union, the security situation has also affected school attendance, with many parents becoming increasingly reluctant to send their children to school due to concerns over safety.
The NUT said the strike is intended to compel government authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted victims.
Teachers across the state were directed to comply with the strike order while remaining peaceful and law-abiding throughout the period of the action.
The union also expressed support for the affected families and assured members that it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders until the abducted teachers and pupils regain their freedom.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of teachers and learners, the NUT stressed that ensuring the safety of schools and educational communities remains a critical priority.
