The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially announced former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The development confirms Amaechi as the running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested general election.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, following consultations with party stakeholders, coalition partners, youth groups, women leaders, and representatives from across the country’s geopolitical zones, The News Edition reports.
According to the ADC, Amaechi’s selection followed the successful conclusion of the party’s presidential primary, where he emerged as the runner-up and secured significant support from delegates nationwide.
The party described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic partnership that combines experience, national appeal, and governance expertise.
ADC noted that Amaechi has accumulated extensive experience across different levels of government, having served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State, and later Minister of Transportation.
The party stated that his record in public service, particularly in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and transportation reforms, makes him well-positioned to support a future ADC administration.
According to the statement, Amaechi’s experience in both the legislative and executive arms of government provides valuable institutional knowledge that would strengthen the party’s leadership team.
‘A National Ticket’
The ADC also argued that Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South region and across Southern Nigeria would complement Atiku’s national profile and help broaden the party’s support base.
The party described the presidential ticket as a national coalition capable of bridging regional, political, and generational divides.
It added that the partnership reflects its commitment to addressing key national challenges, including economic growth, job creation, security, and national unity.
The ADC further expressed confidence that the Atiku-Amaechi ticket would energize its supporters and offer Nigerians what it described as a credible alternative for governance.
The party called on its members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth groups, women associations, and other stakeholders to support its campaign efforts ahead of the 2027 election.
According to the ADC, the newly unveiled ticket represents its vision for a stronger, more secure, and more prosperous Nigeria.
