The Nigerian Senate has approved an extension of the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 budget from September 30 to December 31, 2026.

The Senate approved the extension on Tuesday after considering and passing a bill seeking to amend the 2025 Appropriation Act.
The bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District, was passed following clause-by-clause consideration by lawmakers, The News Edition reports.
Presenting the bill, Bamidele said the extension was necessary because the implementation of capital projects under the 2025 budget had not reached optimal levels, despite the release of funds to ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
He described the proposed amendment as both compelling and pragmatic, arguing that additional time was needed to ensure the effective implementation of the budget’s capital projects.
The legislation, identified as Senate Bill 1067, seeks to amend the Appropriations (Repeal and Enactment) Act 2025 by extending the deadline for implementing its capital component by three months.
With the Senate’s approval, the new deadline for implementing the 2025 budget’s capital component is December 31, 2026.
