A tragic accident disrupted an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign rally in Osun State on Wednesday after a trailer reportedly rammed into party supporters, leaving one person dead and seven others injured.
The incident occurred in the Oke Gada area of Ede during a campaign walk organised in support of the APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.
Trailer Reportedly Suffers Brake Failure
According to eyewitness accounts, the trailer suddenly veered off its lane and crashed into the campaign procession.
The driver reportedly attributed the accident to brake failure, claiming he lost control of the vehicle moments before it ploughed into the crowd.
Witnesses said panic erupted as party supporters scattered for safety while emergency responders rushed to assist victims at the scene.
Casualties and Injuries Recorded
The crash reportedly claimed the life of one participant, while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims were immediately evacuated to nearby hospitals, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Authorities have yet to release the identities of those affected by the accident.
APC Confirms Incident
Confirming the development, the Director of Media and Information of the APC in Osun State, Kola Olabisi, said the party had received reports of the accident but was still gathering details.
According to him, a party delegation has been dispatched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the full extent of the casualties.
Olabisi stated that the APC would provide further information after completing its preliminary assessment.
FRSC Yet to Receive Official Report
When contacted, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Osun State, Agnes Ogungbemi, said the command had not yet received an official report regarding the crash.
She noted that the agency would provide updates once details of the incident become available through official channels.
Growing Concern Over Road Safety During Political Activities
The incident has raised fresh concerns about road safety during large political gatherings and campaign activities, especially as preparations intensify for the Osun governorship election.
Political observers have called for stricter traffic management measures and improved coordination between campaign organisers and relevant authorities to prevent similar tragedies.
