The Government of Mexico has formally approved the appointment of former presidential aide Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country, clearing a major diplomatic hurdle for the Nigerian envoy.

Omokri announced the development on Wednesday in a post on his official X account, revealing that the Mexican government had granted the diplomatic approval required for his appointment.
According to Omokri, José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, delivered the diplomatic agreement to Nigeria’s Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil, The News Edition reports.
The approval, known as agrément, signifies Mexico’s formal acceptance of Omokri as Nigeria’s representative to the country.
Reno Omokri Confirms Mexico’s Diplomatic Approval
In his announcement, Omokri expressed gratitude over the development and confirmed that he would serve as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Mexican States.
He will also have concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, meaning his diplomatic responsibilities will extend to the three Central American countries.
In his statement on X, Omokri wrote:
“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States.”
The diplomatic approval represents an important step in completing the process for Omokri to assume his ambassadorial responsibilities.
Tinubu Nominated Reno Omokri in 2025
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025 as part of a list of 69 nominees submitted for diplomatic appointments.
The nominees included former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The Nigerian Senate confirmed the nominees in December 2025, paving the way for the completion of the diplomatic appointment process.
On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved the postings of 65 ambassadors-designate, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City.
Why Mexico’s Approval Was Important
Although Omokri’s nomination and Senate confirmation had been completed, he still required formal acceptance from the Mexican government before the diplomatic appointment could proceed fully.
Under diplomatic practice, a country must grant agrément before a proposed ambassador can be formally accepted as its counterpart’s representative.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously disclosed that Mexico and Japan were yet to grant approval for some of the country’s ambassadorial postings, adding that the necessary consent was expected in due course.
Mexico’s decision to approve Omokri therefore resolves the outstanding diplomatic clearance associated with his posting.
His appointment is expected to support Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with Mexico and the other countries covered by his concurrent accreditation.
